Swimming Timetable for 2010/2011 Season

Swimming begins on …

The first swimming sessions in the 2010/2011 calendar for the respective squads are:

Wed 1 Sept:    Seals: 18.00-19.00 at Putney Leisure centre

County: 18.00-19.30 at Putney Leisure Centre
Regional & National: 19.00-21.00 at Putney Leisure Centre
Fri 3 Sept:      Dolphins: 18.00-19.00 at Putney Leisure Centre
Sun 5 Sept:     Otters: 8.00-9.00 at Bank of England

National, Regional and County Squads
The weekly timetable for 2010/2011 is as last year except there will be no training sessions for National, Regional and County Squads on Monday mornings. These sessions were poorly attended over recent months and it does not make economic sense to continue to offer this particular time slot for the time being. Instead, we hope that all National and Regional swimmers will make every effort to attend the Friday morning sessions, which remain as before (5.30-7.00 at Putney).

Dolphin Squad
Many Dolphin swimmers met their new coach, Shaun Brooking, in July. Shaun who has a degree in Sports Science has been teaching swimming for many years and we are delighted to welcome him to WSC. His first session will be Saturday 4 September at Ibstock Place School (Kamilla will run the Dolphin session on Friday 3 September). Swimmers and parents, if you haven’t met him already please make yourself known to Shaun when you see him and give him a warm welcome to our Club.

The new timetable is posted in the timetable section, or from this link, and will be amended as we finalise next year's season.

2010 National Championships

Wandsworth Swimming Club has a history dating back more than 100 years. But this year the Club has hit new heights with a record 18 swimmers and four of our relay teams qualifying for a total of 65 events at the BAGCAT, Youth and Open Nationals in Sheffield in July/August. Competing at National level against the top 40 or so swimmers in a given age group and stroke represents the pinnacle of club level swimming. Congratulations, what a fantastic achievement and good luck to you all!

It is particularly pleasing to have swimmers competing for WSC across all four stoke disciplines and over all distances from 50m sprints up to 1500m and in the Open water competition as well.

Congratulations also to head coach Marina and to Kamilla as well for all their hard work and dedication over the past year.

Open Meets

We have updated our Competition Calendar with links to the host club's meet entry forms and promoter's conditions to make it easier for swimmers to complete the necessary paperwork.  Please return your entry forms and the appropriate cheque by the closing date to the Meet Co-ordinator.  Both the closing date and the name of the meet co-ordinator are now shown in the calendar.  Our Open Meets page will continue to provide any meet specific information such as logistics or changes in any of the arrangements.

Volunteers

If you have friends that are keen on swimming (or who want to learn) and would like to join in the success of WSC, we still have a few vacancies. The Club holds swimming trials from time to time – please talk to your coach or any member of the committee for further details.

A request for help: a club like ours is entirely dependent on voluntary support from parents to ensure that all runs smoothly. We are currently reliant on a small group of parents to do much of this work – most of these helpers have older children in the National and Regional Squads.

We are seeking additional support, particularly from parents with children in the Otters, Seals or Dolphins squads. If your child is benefiting from what the Club has to offer please consider what you might be able to offer the Club in return, even if you can only help out on an occasional basis. Similarly, if you have ideas/suggestions, please see any member of the Committee.

The club is looking for volunteers to:

  •  run the timing and results process at Club Galas
  •  fulfil the committee role of Development Officer
  •  fulfil the committee role of Volunteer Development Officer
  •  fulfil the committee role of Local Community Liaison Officer

Raise funds for WSC by shopping at our Web Shop

We have introduced an on-line retail site that generates commission for the club from any purchases made through it at many well known high street brands.  Visit the site at this link or go to the Shopping page for more details.

Dolphin Squad swimmers

Wandsworth Swim Club will be holding Competitive Start workshops to refresh swimmers' diving and starting skills. The workshops will take you through the ASA Competitive Start Award test. When you pass all the challenges you will get a certificate and a badge, as well as the eligibility to swim in a wider range of competitive events.

The Competitive Start Award is necessary for you to be allowed to do a diving start at most galas and meets and it is requirement of our Swim 21 accreditation. All swimmers at WSC will be required to achieve this award in order to progress to the County Squad.

Don't worry if you do not pass the test the first time. You will be given further instruction on specific skills and will be able to re-take the test as often as necessary. Our goal is to teach everyone to dive well, not to discourage anyone.

Competitive Start workshops will be held once a month at the regular Saturday Dolphin session at 9.30am at Ibstock Place pool.

Please contact Cindy Hanegraaf if you cannot make any of the Saturday sessions;  we will make arrangements for occasional weekday Dolphin sessions for this award.
