WSC has scaled new heights this year with six Club members achieving a remarkable ten National Qualifying Times (NQTs) for the BAGCAT & Youth Championships. As usual these will be held at the Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield and represent the pinnacle of club level achievement.

Congratulations to the following members who achieved NQTs and will be representing WSC at the Nationals:

  • Georgina Rendell (2 NQTs): 100m backstroke; 200m backstroke

  • Tim Robinson:  800m freestyle

ASA National Youth Championships (28 July – 2 August)

  • Sophie Woodward-Fisher – 50m freestyle

  • Katherine Pyne – 100m backstroke

Very well done and the best of luck to each of you for the Nationals. Also a huge thank you to all WSC coaches for their hard work and enthusiasm in helping swimmers achieve such tremendous success.

The Regionals - 2009

Wandsworth swimmers triumph at London Regionals.

There was more success for Wandsworth Swimming Club at the 2009 London BAGCAT Regional Championships. Club swimmers secured a fantastic haul of 22 medals, which included 5 Gold, 8 Silver and 9 Bronze plus 18 finalist positions and 4 National Qualifying Times (NQTs) – achievements unparalleled in the Club’s 100+ year history.

Special mention to Tim Robinson who was overall winner of the 12 year BAGCAT category, winning 5 Gold, 2 Silver and 2 Bronze plus securing an NQT in 800m freestyle.

Congratulations also to Emilio Sison (5th, 10 year Boys), Hannah Kern (7th, 12 year Girls) and Anna Pang (8th, 10 year Girls).

Well done to everyone that took part and to our Speedo group coaches Marina and Kamila, who have done a first class job ensuring that swimmers performed to their full potential.

Also thank you to the parents that were at Crystal Palace, particularly for their encouragement to all WSC swimmers and for their vocal support from the spectators’ gallery.

New Squad Structure for 2009/2010

We have re-structured our squads to be better aligned to the ASA Long Term Athlete Development programme.  This has resulted in more time in the pool for our older swimmers and the addition of much needed land training in the gym at Putney Leisure Centre with a qualified instructor.  We have also adjusted the performance criteria to align with the target meet for the squad at the end of the season.  We will be introducing league and lower level open meets for our younger swimmers to provide opportunities to test their progress throughout the year.  A new competition timetable will be published later this month for the 2009/2010 season.

For more information please refer to the Squads section of the website.

New Timetable for 2009/2010

With the move to Putney Leisure Centre we have a new timetable.  Some of the key features are:

  • weekday morning swimming for our top squads

  • earlier times on the weekend to allow more time for family and other activites

  • a day off for our top squads at the weekend to prevent competitions interrupting training

  • land training introduced for our top squads

  • longer course training in the 33m pool configuration

We have now introduced additional pool time for our younger swimmers in the early evening.  We will be introducing long course training and further 25m training after Christmas.

Wandsworth Swimming Club was successful this month in gaining Swim 21 accreditation at both Teaching and Skills Development levels.  This is a fantastic achievement for the club and recognises that we are committed to providing safe and effective coaching of the highest standard for the benefit of our swimmers. We have, as a result of working to achieve this standard, introduced a number of changes to the club's procedures including development pathways that aim to support all our swimmers to be the best they can.  Our ethos is to provide competitive swimming for all abilities working in partnership with the local authority and this too has been recognised by this award.

We will be celebrating our achievement at an event at Putney Leisure Centre in July to which all members will be invited.  We will let you know the details in the next week or so.

For more details on Swim 21, please see the Swim 21 page on our website or follow this link to the British Swimming website.

Volunteers

The club is looking for volunteers to:

  •  run the timing and results process at Club Galas
  •  fulfil the committee role of Volunteer Development Officer
  •  fulfil the committee role of Local Community Liaison Officer
  •  pass the ASA Judge 1 assessment to become a Timekeeper and Inspector of Turns
  •  pass the ASA Judge 2 assessment to be a Judge of Stroke

Please email Admin@wandsworthsc.com if you are able to help.

Parking at St Paul's

ALL CARS must be parked in the car park adjacent to the main driveway and not on the  pavements.  There are pathways to access the sports complex and swimming pool.  Please can ALL parents and swimmers use these and NOT walk across the grassed area by the John Colet Statue, as this area is being badly damaged.
